Sara Stevenson

Owner & Creative Director

Takes the Lead On: Weddings, Corporate Events, Graphic Design, Other Productions

Hey! I’m Sara!

After 6 years of working professionally in the event & design Industry, I decided to create my own space here as Function Design House. Function was designed to combine my love of both events and graphic design as well as to highlight the unique way in which I conduct my work! I approach everything I do with kindness, compassion and a lot of laughter, and back it up with industry leading planning & design practices built on abundant creativity, logistical excellence and strong relationships.

Before starting Function Design House, I worked as a Lead Planner & General Manager for one of BC’s largest event planning firms. As General Manager, I oversaw 100+ weddings & events and lead a team of 12 incredibly talented planners through a record breaking post-pandemic season! As a Lead Planner, I spent years planning & designing weddings and corporate events for the absolute best clients anyone could ask for! I’ve worked at venues all across the province and produced every kind of wedding you could imagine - from intimate west coast elopements in Jordan River, to perfectly sized and styles celebrations at places like Fort Common, Bilston Creek, & Victoria’s Best Hotels, to large scale multi-day private property weddings.

What’s it like to work with me?

I prefer meetings to feel more like a catch-up with an old friend. Let’s settle in with our favourite beverage or snacks and tackle your project together! I encourage clients to always stay true to themselves and their unique priorities, and am constantly looking for ways to further personalize their experience. I opt for customized workflows and communication methods that work best for the individual client, respecting the different ways in which we all function. While I’m a Planner and Designer by profession, more often than not I’m also: a cheerleader, a coach, a shoulder to cry on, a marketing consultant, a conflict resolution specialist or a friend who’s always there with a bottle of wine and a cute dog to snuggle.

When on site, I’m the calm and collected girl with the clip board. When I’m not busy orchestrating an exceptional experience for guests, vendors or clients, you’ll likely catch me singing along to the dance floor hits during takedown or making sure that everyone has had a chance to try the incredible canapés.

What do I bring to your team?

  • Snacks. Always snacks.

  • A reputation for being fun & easy to work with while creating high-end productions.

  • An expansive network of vendors, partners and connections - if you have a need, I probably have a human for that.

  • Experience in (almost) every type & style of event there is, if you can celebrate it, I’ve planned it!

What do you do when you’re not working?

I’m settling nicely into my 30s with a great balance between my work, social, and home life! Outside of the house, you’ll likely catch me in one of my favourite studios! I’m a competitive dancer and avid spin enthusiast. I also spend time with my close friends hitting up our favourite concerts (music is my saviour!), enjoying some drinks and dinner on a patio, or attending another epic themed party we’ve thrown together (ask me about the time I dressed up as the Queen’s corgis).

Takes the Lead On: Wedding Design, Stationery, Planning & Administrative Emails, Coordination

Hey! I’m Ashley!

Design has been a lifelong passion of mine, but it truly blossomed during my time studying Visual Communications at ACAD and Fashion Design at Ryerson.

I have been in hospitality for as long as I’ve been legally allowed to work and have always loved the relational and customer service aspects of that world. The moment I got a taste of events though, I was hooked. I’ve always been drawn to design and cohesive aesthetics, and experiencing the event industry made me realize I could do something that brought all my passions together.

Starting in restaurants, I was doing everything under the sun; serving, hosting, bartending, managing, payroll and yes, I even worked in the kitchen for a short period of time! My wide range of experience has given me the ability to approach every situation from any angle. I thoroughly enjoy getting the opportunity to see the whole picture and come up with creative and effective solutions unique to the respective situation.

After moving to Victoria in 2018, it wasn't long until I found my way into the vibrant Event Industry here on the island! When I'm not with Function, you'll find me hanging out with my other event family, Twist of Fate!

Here at Function, I enjoy getting to jump in on all aspects of event planning. From planning and emails, to designing stationery or coordinating on site - no matter where I am you'll find me in my happy place! One of my favourite aspects of events are the small details. They may not always be noticeable, but something as small as perfectly aligned chairs brings me SO. MUCH .JOY!

When I’m not working, you can find me cozied up with my dog Indy and partner Kyle (most definitely with a cocktail in hand :))
